How #FollowSA rocked Joburg at Fire and Ice - project me day 755

A huge thank you to the biggest #FollowSA crowd to date ... 130 people, for making #howzite2012 such a memorable event!

I don’t know whether yesterday, the day of the event, or today was more of a whirlwind. What an incredible event #FollowSA #Howzit2012 turned out to be. My very rough estimate is that #followsa was Tweeted over 1000 times for the event.

The Fire and Ice Melrose Arch team headed by Anton Gillis who just happens to be an amazing DJ on the side. What a bonus

Twitter was an absolute frenzy of Tweets with the hashtag #fireandicema thanks to the generous hospitality of Anton Gillis and his Protea Hotels Fire and Ice team. I don’t have words to express the pride and emotion that filled my night as I took in the venue that made #FollowSA #Howzit2012 the most spectacular event to date.

A special thanks to Karen Battaliou who doubled as an employee and a very dear friend. #FollowSA was born because of my wish that people connected to amazing individuals in the way that I have and K, you are a shining example. Thank you!

The food just never stopped ... wow!

It’s the first time that a venue has catered for a #FollowSA event as part of the sponsorship and the combination of mindbogglingly delicious and the endless supply of it was just spectacular.

I mean, have you EVA?

Yes, that was desert. An unbelievably delicious tower of heavenly pastry, cream, chocolate and strawberry. I’m sure there’s a pic of me walking around with an entire plate full at some point.

Lovoka Milkshakes .... mmmmm

Thanks to Franco D’ Onofrio of Twiga Communications for organising the Lovoka sponsorship so that #followsa could welcome each guest with an adult milkshake that Fire and Ice Melrose Arch hotel is famous for.

Greggie talking the crowd through a very interesting prize from Hustler Girl's store, Hustler Extreme!

A huge thank you to the prize givers, @lovokaSA, @hustlergirl, @daisydeblonde of @lamb_media, @jdhairbeauty and @proteahotels #fireandicema … it’s always such a fun time at the events and with you guys there would surely be something amiss at #followsa

A host of amazing celebs graced the stage

I’m always so humbled by the amazing entertainers who have found their way to the #FollowSA events and found such joy in being a part of the excitement.
Thank you to my dear Sibu Radebe, who I happened to meet through my blogging journey, for stepping in to be emergency MC for the night. You are such a great presence and we were honoured to share the stage with you.
Crushanda Forbes came 3rd in the Idols finals last year and it was so great to have her join us on stage to hand out prizes. Thanks for being such a great sport and for you enthusiasm to be a part of a future #followsa event.
Then there’s Caitlin the electric violinist …

Caitlin, you are an entertainer beyond words and you took the crowd’s breath away by your incredible talent with the violin. Thank you for giving so generously of your time to make #FollowSA #Howzit2012 what it was … and thanks most of all for honouring my special request and playing Cotton Eye Joe for me! I love you kid!!!
I will be posting a video of Caitlin in action for her project me interview on the blog in the near future.

To the new faces and the old, you are #followsa and these events are for you and because of you and on behalf of Greg, Lifeology and me I thank you for every Tweet and every questions that asks: “when is the next #FollowSA event?”

Lastly … to the man in my life who doubles as #FollowSA’s resident photographer, Pat Sloane (and I don’t have a pic because he’s always hiding behind the camera) I thank you for capturing every event as a perfect moment in time, for loving and supporting me and putting up with speed wobble before, during and after every event!

On top of the world and around the country – project me day 516

On top of the world and around the country - project me day 516

There’s only one way to get your big girl (or boy) panties (or boxers) on and get out into the big wide world of things that fear you … Nike has it so right and I wish I could tattoo “Just do it” on most people’s foreheads. Of course I would need to start with mine.

We all have fears and we look at each other as though our fears are much scarier. I can think of a good number of people who I look at very strangely when they say something scares them. To me, it’s easy! Shove me on stage, totally unprepared, and I will be fine. Give me a topic I’m comfortable with at least. Don’t ask me geography questions in public unless you are planning on making a complete ass of me. Funny that, considering what I’m about to announce.

I’m determined not to start the ‘book’ with the opening line: “It began over a pizza and coffee”, so count it as officially being used. Truth is, it did begin that way and with a whole lot of frustration as I watched a friend put an awesome idea on a shelf because of a whole lot of fears.  Mostly, his fears didn’t scare me, so it was easy to give him a handful of reasons to ‘just do it’. By the end of the evening we had a brilliant idea and both of us were making a whole lot of dreams a reality.

Pat Sloane has never seen the best parts of South Africa and for some reason I have had my dad on my mind in the most tear jerking way. Pat is a brilliant photographer and I’m a passionate writer. Pat wants to create a coffee table book of the positive side of our beautiful country and I want to give people a true understanding of happiness.
Greg and myself has dreamed of changing the perception of charity and so Lifeology Rich (readying individuals to create happiness) was born. There is so much to tell you about that aspect of our vision, but for the most part, we want to give back in the only way we know how … by empowering individuals to discover their richness within.

While I was standing on top of the 22nd floor of the most gorgeous building in the centre of Braamfontein on a frosty winter’s night in South Africa, I had two thoughts.
1 … holy crap, I climbed into an elevator and went up 22 flights without thinking I was going to do. Yes, I’m that afraid of them. I have even walked up 17 flights to my hotel room (up and down) for an entire weekend. I have made my sister walk up over 150 steps in London to avoid the subway elevator … I am that afraid! Well … I was that afraid! Staring at the beautiful view at Randlords and watching the lights twinkle and Jozi glisten, I realised that I had no need for an old pattern anymore.

I used to be afraid of getting lost or stuck in lifts and public toilets in case no one noticed I was missing. It was my fear that I would be stuck there or lost for hours or days. I can’t be claustrophobic because I’m happy to climb in a plane or pile into a noisy club and small space … but lose me in a crowd and my world falls apart. I’m not that girl anymore … the one who thinks I’m not noticed or that I’m so insignificant that I will be gone for hours and no one will even notice I’m missing. It’s been that recent that yesterday was the first elevator trip that didn’t scare the panties off of me. Okay, I cling to my cellphone a little, but that’s better than walking 22 flights of stairs.

So, on top of the world, really was that spectacular.

The other incredible moment was realising that I’m about to make one of my dad’s dreams a reality. No wonder I have been so emotional about him of late. With Pat’s fears putting on the breaks and me battling to watch people not overcome their fears, I took the plunge and told him that we would collaborate on our dreams coming true. My dad wanted to see South Africa in one long trip (but being on the road with an oxygen tank to survive is not the wisest idea) and Pat wants to take pics of the happiest moments he can capture in this magnificent country. I, on the other hand, want to do an incredible trip in memory of my dad, blog about it and share the concept that happiness truly is that individual. If you ask 100 people what happiness means to them, I know you will get 100 different answers … and so, Project Happiness is born!

The how’s are always the fun part and there’s a lot to plan without getting too bogged down in the detail. So it’s a month on the road, driving through SA and taking pictures of what happiness means to the people we meet and see around us. Then a coffee table book will be born with the combination of my telling the story of our trip and quoting South Africans from every corner of this incredible place and asking only one question … “What does happiness mean to you?”

Well …

What it means to blog daily – project me day 497

What it means to blog daily - project me day 497

People think I’m crazy all of the time. Some are in awe at the commitment to blog daily and others don’t get how I put my personal life online for the world to read, but no one knows what it means to blog every single day … no matter what.

Today is one of those no matter what days. It’s one of those days that I think I’m crazy and I try convince myself that one day without it will go unnoticed! Who am I kidding? It won’t go unnoticed by you and it won’t go unnoticed by me. I chose this for all the right reasons and not one ounce of today would have existed without the birth of the blog … but that doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m tired, sore and drained on all levels.

I might sound like Moaning Minny now, but by the time I’m finished blogging I will be dragging my butt to bed with a big smile of fulfillment and gratitude on my face.

When I’m done I won’t be moaning about having dragged my ass out of bed before the sun rose (remembering that I’m a 7:30 … ok, 8am riser).
I won’t be complaining about my bruised toe (or is that broken) that I whacked on the chest in my bedroom because it was still dark when I got up and felt my way to my bathroom. Yes … also not moaning that I haven’t found the time to do the simple chore of buying a lamp for my beautiful new bedroom in my precious new home.

I have no reason to complain about the morning I spent with my newest sponsor, Pat Sloane at his photo studio. Okay, I was a bit complainy in the photo but that’s  because I still hate photos of me and they were compulsory … to launch the sponsorship and for media for Sunday. That’s what I am most impressed about with Pat. I fall into that bigger girl category and I hate photos for that very reason. He made me feel so pretty … and look so pretty (yes, I know I’m pretty but I’m also hippy, booby and double chinny) and he made it all look fab … pics tomorrow when I launch the sponsorship!

I certainly didn’t complain when Greg and I went to do the final arrangements at Cafe Culture. I can’t believe that Sunday is 3 sleeps away and that I have these two incredible sponsors in the venue and 6 on 13th who are giving away a Kathy van Zeeland handbag. Beyond venue and bag sponsorship, these incredible people and so many Twitter friends and followers have embraced the journey I have been on and they are turning this event into one that is beyond my wildest expectations of my blog or my journey.

It was lunching with Greg and Hustler Girl and then off to do some socialising of an online product. In between that it was RSVP’s, media invites, counting guest numbers and making sure #D500 gets as much exposure as possible.

The throbbing toe didn’t help … pain never does! Seriously what happens if I have to go to my own event on Sunday with a slipper on? Yes … it’s that sore!

I’m certainly not moaning, although I won’t even remember what I typed in this blog from pure exhaustion, but after all the hype of the day it was Thursday Club.
Once a month we have this amazing networking event and everyone mingles, a few prizes are given away and it’s always at a gorgeous venue in Jozi. Tonight it was at Turbine Hall in Braamfontein and the venue was incredible. I won a prize … yippee … no wait, I wont two prizes. Okay … that needs some explaining. So Greggie won a dress, that wouldn’t have suited him, so he gave it to me. But then when I won the one night’s stay at Hotel Lamunu I gave him back his dress and went to claim my prize.
I’m lucky enough to have been offered a night at Hotel Lamunu as a blogger and to do a post on my experience, so the prize is wasted on me … hence I have decided to donate it to a lucky person at the #D500 event. I love networking … used to hate doing it offline, but I’m into it now. It didn’t take away from the fact that my poor toe was killing me and that I’m overwhelmed and exhausted from all the #D500 hype.

I even tried to get out of blogging, but my best friend gave me the ‘not a chance’ look.

So here I am … there it is … and sometimes blogging daily means bitching about it, but realising why you chose to do it when you are done!

PS … I can’t remember when last I was this excited, having as much fun or prouder of myself!
